Hyakka Ryouran Samurai Girls – 12 (END)

「さよならの忠」 (Sayonara no Chuu)
“Goodbye Kiss”

It was a little cliché, a tad too overdramatic, and had black and white battle scenes that dragged out for a bit too long, but this climactic finale still left a very good impression on the series as a whole. Surprisingly, the loss of Jubei’s innocent personality wasn’t emphasized in a remorseful way, and instead became the high point of her final battle with a Amakusa Shirou empowered Gisen.

Hyakka Ryouran Samurai Girls – 11

「仏蘭西から来たサムライ」 (Furansu kara Kita Samurai)
“The Samurai From France”

This sleeper series continues to impress, as the cliffhanger from last episode picks up in many ways that I was expecting, and in many ways that I wasn’t as well. Jubei’s awakening as her master samurai counterpart led to a fair bit of action, whereas Nia’s past with Yoshihiko built up the drama and provided a truly unexpected dimension to the story.

Hyakka Ryouran Samurai Girls – 10

「魔眼の牢獄」 (Magan no Rougoku)
“The Evil Eye’s Prison”

Who would’ve thought that this would turn out to be one of the sleepers of the season? Ever since the second episode, this series has far exceeded my expectations for a high school comedy set in a fictional alternate universe where the Tokugawa shogunate won the Boshin War (unlike in Hakuouki), and now it goes a step above that by mixing in a fair degree of interesting plot to go with all the laughs thus far.

Hyakka Ryouran Samurai Girls – 09

「将(ジェネラル)の帰還」 (Shou (Jeneraru) no Kikan)
“The General’s Return”

First off, congrats to Kanetsugu for winning the first Hyakka Ryouran Samurai Girls popularity poll and getting an official wallpaper to commemorate the occasion. It looks like I’m not the only one that’s grown really fond of our idiotic samurai, who managed to edge out the top spot from the very adorable Jubei.

Hyakka Ryouran Samurai Girls – 08

「忠の奴隷」 (Chuu no Dorei)
“Slave to the Kiss”

With Yagyuu Gisen (Mizuhara Kaoru) joining the cast and offering her body to Muneakira in any way he desires, we finally have that promiscuous character to really drive Yukimura and Sen up the wall with jealousy. The way she presents herself without any modesty and goes straight for Muneakira’s crotch provided a lot of fan-service, but worked really well in combination with the comedic moments to balance it out.

Hyakka Ryouran Samurai Girls – 07

「大日本を覆う影」 (Dai Nippon wo Oou Kage)
“The Shadow Cast Over Great Japan”

“My cottage!!!” That may sound ridiculously random if you haven’t watched this episode yet, but those who have should know what I’m referring to after Kanetsugu decides to make the doghouse outside Yagyuu dojo her new home. I actually went back to that scene several times and found it just as funny as the first time, thanks to Toyosaki Aki’s haughty yet amiable portrayal of our purple-haired disposable samurai.

Hyakka Ryouran Samurai Girls – 06

「襲い来る、海の怪物」 (Osoi Kuru, Umi no Kaibutsu)
“The Marine Monster Attacks”

Even with a beach episode featuring a tentacle monster, this series still manages to keep the silly humor going strong and the fan-service in check. For a moment, I was worried they’d get carried away when the slimy extremities caught a hold of Matabee and Hanzou, but that turned out to be a pretty brief scene like I was hoping.

Hyakka Ryouran Samurai Girls – 05

「愛の戦士、登場」 (Ai no Senshi, Toujou)
“The Warrior of Love Arrives”

It looks like we’re on a master samurai parade with the way Muneakira is locking lips left and right, but if the opening sequence is any indication of things to come, this should be the last one we see for at least the next while. Whatever the case, the introduction of Yukimura’s childhood “friend” Naoe Kanetsugu (Toyosaki Aki) made this episode an absolute riot to watch.

Hyakka Ryouran Samurai Girls – 04

「ねえ忠してよ?」 (Nee Chuu Shite yo?)
“Hey, Kiss Me?”

I don’t know what the heck a “Sky Love Hurricane Kiss” is, but if Yukimura is the one delivering it, I’m guessing some air time is involved, much like when she busted out some master samurai abilities of her own.

Hyakka Ryouran Samurai Girls – 03

「剣姫(マスターサムライ)の正体」 (Tsurugi Hime (Masutaa Samurai) no Shoutai)
“The Sword Princess’ (Master Samurai) True Identity”

Seeing as all the female characters have yet to be introduced, I haven’t even considered comparing the ones seen thus far. However, if I were to make an early pick, Sen would be my favorite at the moment with that feisty tsundere-like attitude of hers.

Hyakka Ryouran Samurai Girls – 02

「裸体転生」 (Ratai Tensei)
“Naked Reincarnation”

Given the month-long break since I covered the early broadcast premiere of this series, I had totally forgotten that we’re dealing with a samurai high school comedy here. Well this second episode quickly reminded me of that, and didn’t hold back on the action either with some flashy fighting exposition to get things going.

Hyakka Ryouran Samurai Girls – 01

「はじめての忠」 (Hajimete no Chuu)
“First Kiss”

An early broadcast premiere of the anime adaptation of Hobby Japan‘s 40th anniversary original novel and figure series was aired on Tokyo MX almost a month before the actual start of the fall season. Much like their other work that ARMS studio animated, Queen’s Blade, I just know a lot of people are going to quickly write this series off, but I’m tempted to cover it to prevent that from happening. Ignorance is not bliss.
